Mazi Udeka was aroused from sleep very early in
the morning by a knock on his door , he sat up from bed and listened again.
This time he heard a voice outside the door.
‘Udeka!Udeka!Udeka!’
‘Who is that !’ Udeka belowed in his deep
baritone voice,
‘It is Uremma’
‘Which Uremma!’
‘Uremma your only sister’
Udeka moved quickly to the door on recognizing
his sisters voice, when he opened the door he saw Uremma with a bundle in her
arms.
Inside the house Uremma sat down on floor while
Udeka adjusted his new oil lamp and placed it between his bed and uremma to
brighten the room as well as provide some warmth .
Udeka sat down on his bed of raised mud and
straw mat and gazsed at Uremma for a while wondering what had brought her to
his house by this time.
‘How is your husband?’ He asked in a shaky
voice.
‘He is fine and healthy’ Uremma replied
‘Do you people have any quarrel?’
‘No’ she replied again
‘Then what is this entire scare about, you had
me worried’
Uremma glanced around the big hut as if to
ensure it’s safe to broach the subject that has brought all the way from
umualaoma village before the cock crow. As if to make her mind up for her the
baby in her arms stirred from sleep and began to cry.
‘Please brother save my baby!’ She gasped her
heart heaving as all her emotions rushed to her head.
Mazi Udeka was startled by this outburst.
‘Is your child sick? What is wrong with it’
Udeka asked in a concerned voice
Uremma calmed herself down once again. She took
some time to think. While she untied her wrapper to feed her baby.’She must act
with tact’.
After a
while she raised her head and her gaze moved from the baby in her arms to Mazi
Udeka’s face.
‘Ude I have heard a lot about your new god and
how things are different in your new way worship. What can you tell me about
your new God and how is he better than our own gods.
Mazi Udeka was surprised to hear his own sister
Uremma. He wanted to scream at ,her. How
could she wake him up this early just to ask about his religion. But she had
also walked ten kilometers in the dark
so his inquisitive nature took over him and he answered her in a gentle voice.
Christianity was a subject he loved to discuss.
